November News. Oxbridge Entry Tests. Christmas Events in London.

Friday December 2nd, 2016

Only two weeks left until the end of the first academic term and Christmas is almost upon us.
Applications to universities and senior schools submitted, interviews and entry tests are scheduled, academic work is never ending!

In November Oxford and Cambridge university applicants had to sit their relevant subject pre-interview tests:

– Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT) for Medicine, results of which are available to candidates on 25 November.
One of the four options for the writing skills assessment part of this test was: “Should the junior doctors be allowed to strike?” – a tough question the UK politicians are struggling to resolve right now.

– English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT) and Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) results are available online to candidates on 16 January.

– Law National Admissions Test (LNAT) results are emailed to candidates in early February. Example of a question for LNAT essay this year: “Should arranged marriages be banned in the Western society?”

Well done to those applying to Oxbridge that have passed their exams successfully and secured the interviews. Another hurdle overcome, now they have the three day interviews at their Oxford or Cambridge colleges to pass and the predicted grades to achieve in the summer!

But as it is Christmas time, we all deserve a little relaxation. I am really looking forward to attending Christmas Carols in December and going ice skating with my family. If you are in London in December and would like to get into the Christmas spirit, you might be interested in booking the tickets for a few Christmas themed events the capital has to offer.

Westminster Abbey Christmas Concert 15 December 19.00. Some tickets are still available from here.

A number of Christmas events will be held at the Barbican from 22 December to 2 January, from Handel to Gershwin, see here.

Ice skating is a very Christmassy thing to do with kids. There are a number of ice rinks in and around London. A little tip – bring your own skates if you have them, the rental ones are often rather uncomfortable.

My favourite ice rinks are:

Hampton Court with its traditional Henry VIII  house as a beautiful backdrop.
Sleek and glitzy Canary Wharf
and the beautiful Somerset House by the Thames.
Don’t forget all schools will be holding their Christmas dinners and various events for pupils and for their parents, do look out for the invites to those.

Christmas Carols will be very popular and worth booking promptly. And, thinking of the academic matters, tutors fall in the same category – they get booked up for Christmas holidays very quickly. Don’t miss out, book your tutors to revise before January tests as early as possible!
